Clean-Up Day at Lynchburg's Historic White Rock Cemetery, Saturday July 18th
Thank you for joining us on the bridge crossing this year! If you’ve spent any amount of time with us, you’ve probably read about Ota Benga. Last year, we shared his story: Ota Benga, 1883-1916. This year, the Ota Benga International Committee reflected on our theme “Are We There Yet?”: Reflections from the Ota Benga International Committee. Benga is known to be buried in Lynchburg, Virginia, at the Historic White Rock Cemetery, established in 1885 as the first independent African American burial ground in the City. The burial ground is a 23-acre beautiful wooded savannah, open grassy areas mixing with widely spaced trees that blend into forest on the borders.
The late Mrs. Laura Munson devoted her time and resources to preserving the rich heritage of the Historic White Rock Cemetery, and in two Saturdays, we are in invited to come together to recognize her lasting contributions. Jackson Street United Methodist Church, in partnership with the Jubilee Family Development Center and the International Ota Benga Committee, warmly invites you to join them on Saturday, July 18th, as they honor the legacy of Laura Munson and celebrate her birthday.

Bring your weed eaters, trimmers, gloves, lawn mowers, rakes, and wheelbarrows, and join us in this ongoing effort to honor Mrs. Munson’s legacy while helping maintain Lynchburg’s oldest African American cemetery.
